In 1982, Marty Hoey, a renowned climber, joined an American expedition on Mount Everest. Hoey, a seasoned guide with Rainier Mountaineering Inc, had an impressive climbing record, including summits of Mount Rainier, Denali, Pik Lenin, and Nanda Devi. Known for her skill and composure, Hoey was a key member of the team attempting the challenging North Face route.
While ascending Everest’s North Side in mid-May, tragedy struck as Hoey’s safety line became detached due to an unsecured harness buckle. Without being clipped into the fixed rope, she fell down the couloir, tragically losing her life. The incident halted the team’s summit attempt, with team leader Lou Whittaker expressing that Hoey’s death played a significant role in the decision.
Had she survived, Hoey could have been the first American woman to conquer Everest. Despite the loss, her legacy in the climbing community remains strong, remembered for her dedication and expertise. The expedition faced further sorrow when British climbers Peter Boardman and Joe Tasker perished a few days later while attempting the uncharted North-East Ridge route on Everest. Boardman’s body was found years later, while Tasker’s remains have yet to be located.
