A 12-year-old girl tragically died after being sent home by doctors who initially diagnosed her symptoms as the flu. Azzurra Breda was taken to a pediatric A&E department with a fever and breathing issues. Despite being discharged, her condition worsened at her home in Sant’Angelo di Piove di Sacco, Italy, with a high temperature of 40C.
Following a return to the hospital the next day, she was admitted to intensive care but sadly succumbed to pneumonia on December 31. An investigation is ongoing, with a post-mortem examination scheduled for January 12. Azzurra was described as a talented dancer and pianist, excelling academically and in sports with no known health conditions.
Mayor Guido Carlin expressed condolences, highlighting Azzurra’s active participation in community activities. Pneumonia, an inflammation of the lungs usually due to infection, can lead to serious illness, particularly in vulnerable individuals. Symptoms include coughing, shortness of breath, chest pain, fatigue, and confusion.
If experiencing prolonged coughing, coughing up blood, or breathing difficulties, seeking urgent medical attention is advised. In severe cases, such as difficulty breathing or confusion, emergency services should be contacted immediately. Driving oneself to the hospital in such situations is discouraged.
