“Rabies Alert: Second Cat Infected in Quebec”

In Saint-Anicet, Quebec, a second cat has been diagnosed with raccoon rabies this summer, prompting three individuals to receive preventive treatment after encountering the infected animal, as reported by Santé Québec Montérégie-Centre. This case follows the recent discovery of another cat with the viral disease in Godmanchester, also located in the Montérégie region.

Highlighting the significance of maintaining pets’ vaccinations up to date, Santé Québec emphasizes the ongoing spread of raccoon rabies in the Estrie, Montérégie, and Centre-du-Québec areas. Public health officials advise pet owners to supervise their animals outdoors to prevent potential exposure to the disease.

To minimize risks, individuals are urged to avoid contact with unfamiliar domestic and wild animals, regardless of their apparent health status. In case of contact with a potentially rabid animal, washing the affected area for 10 to 15 minutes and promptly contacting Info-Santé at 811 is recommended for immediate preventive treatment.

Animals infected with rabies may display behavioral changes, aggression, biting tendencies, isolation, reduced appetite, excessive salivation, or unsteady movements. If pets exhibit such symptoms, isolating them from other animals and humans is crucial before seeking veterinary assessment.

The Environment Ministry confirmed the initial case of raccoon rabies in Saint-Eugène-de-Grantham in the Centre-du-Québec region. Residents in the Eastern Townships, Montérégie, and Centre-du-Québec are encouraged to report dead, injured, disoriented, or unusually aggressive raccoons, skunks, or foxes through an online form. For those residing outside these regions, potential rabies cases in wildlife can be reported to the Environment Ministry at 1 877 346-6763.
