A nurse shared her harrowing experience of being assaulted by a mentally ill patient at Broadmoor hospital. Linda McKinlay, along with her colleague Kate Mastalerz, was attacked by Jonty Bravery, who had previously thrown a child off the Tate Modern building. Bravery was recently sentenced to 16 weeks in prison for the assault on the nurses.
Bravery, 24, faced trial at Westminster Magistrates’ Court and was found guilty of the attack. Body-worn camera footage presented in court captured the intense struggle between the nurses and Bravery, with other staff members coming to their aid.
During the trial, Ms. McKinlay described the terrifying ordeal, stating it was her first experience of such violence in her long career at Broadmoor. Both nurses sustained injuries, with McKinlay requiring hospital treatment for scratches and Mastalerz left with a bruised thigh.
The Crown Prosecution Service emphasized the severity of the incident, highlighting the distress faced by the nurses while carrying out their duties. Despite Bravery’s absence at the trial, the compelling evidence led to his conviction for the assault.
In addition to the recent assault, Bravery had previously received a life sentence for throwing a child off a balcony, causing life-altering injuries. The judicial system acknowledged Bravery’s mental health issues but emphasized the seriousness of his actions, leading to a concurrent sentence with his existing term.
Chief Magistrate Paul Goldspring expressed doubts about Bravery’s potential release after the minimum term, considering the nature of his offenses and mental health challenges. The court imposed a fine alongside the sentence for the assault on the nurses.
Bravery’s history of violent behavior at Broadmoor Hospital was highlighted, indicating a pattern of aggression towards staff members. The defendant’s refusal to attend court proceedings further underscored the gravity of his actions and their impact on the victims.
