An American hunter narrowly escaped death after being attacked by a grizzly bear, thanks to a split-second decision that saved his life. Chase Dellwo, 26 at the time, was hunting in the Montana wilderness with his brother when he unexpectedly stumbled upon a 400-pound sleeping male grizzly bear. Dellwo, trying to guide a group of elk towards his brother’s position, startled the bear just three feet away due to bad weather conditions, including snow, rain, and strong winds.
The bear swiftly attacked Dellwo, knocking him down and biting his head, emitting a deafening roar. Despite the brutal assault, Dellwo managed to keep his composure and remembered advice from his grandmother about large animals having a weak gag reflex. In a daring move, he thrust his arm down the bear’s throat, causing the animal to release him and flee.
Subsequently, Dellwo, severely injured and bleeding, reunited with his brother, who rushed him to the hospital. Doctors treated him for numerous stitches and staples on his head, a swollen eye, and deep wounds on his leg. Remarkably, Dellwo expressed understanding towards the bear, emphasizing that it was not the bear’s fault and that it was equally frightened during the encounter.
On social media platform Reddit, users praised Dellwo’s courage and quick thinking in the face of danger. One user commended his bravery and resourcefulness in a life-threatening situation, while another admired his humility in not blaming the bear for the incident.
