A contestant on the BBC quiz show “Only Connect” once mentioned participating in an international whistling contest, sparking Ben Shannon’s curiosity. After signing up for the Masters of Musical Whistling mailing list with his daughter Sumire, they found themselves unexpectedly selected to compete in Los Angeles.
Whistling was a shared talent between Ben and Sumire, cultivated during the pandemic. Initially, they saw the contest as a light-hearted activity but soon realized its serious nature upon making the cut. With coaching from Carole Anne Kaufman, known as the Whistling Diva, they embarked on rigorous practice sessions to hone their skills.
Despite initial reservations and a lingering sense of irony from his teenage years, Ben and Sumire embraced the competition wholeheartedly. In a montage reminiscent of “Rocky,” they dedicated themselves to daily practice sessions leading up to the event in Hollywood.
Upon meeting other talented contestants from around the world, Ben’s skepticism dissolved, replaced by admiration for their genuine passion for whistling. Sumire impressed with her rendition of “Doraemon,” winning silver in the children’s category, while Ben secured gold in the level one adults category with his performance of “It’s Not a Moon.”
The experience proved transformative for Ben, challenging his ironic façade and teaching him the value of embracing sincerity and passion. Winning at the competition affirmed the importance of caring deeply about something, even if it may seem unconventional or silly to others.
Their success at the Masters of Musical Whistling competition highlighted the joy and fulfillment found in pursuing genuine interests and shedding layers of protective irony.
