The Nawican Friendship Centre and emergency homeless shelter in Dawson Creek have a new operating partner, the Aboriginal Housing Management Association. Established for over 50 years, the Nawican Friendship Centre serves as a communal space for urban Indigenous families and locals. Stacey Bourque, the association manager, presented findings from a recent assessment to the city council, focusing on bridging care gaps for vulnerable individuals, particularly those struggling with addiction. Bourque also highlighted community concerns regarding public intoxication and substance abuse, acknowledging the challenges of compassion fatigue experienced by many.
The association has engaged with various stakeholders, including the city, RCMP, Northern Health, South Peace Community Resources Society, and local businesses, to develop a formal complaint system and mitigation strategy. These initiatives aim to enhance community safety and provide support for the homeless population. Bourque emphasized the importance of fostering trust and strengthening relationships within the community, especially with business owners facing difficulties.
Collaborating with the Dawson Creek Native Housing Society, the association is working to secure additional housing options and comprehensive assistance for those in need, with a focus on addressing addiction and housing insecurity in the area. Bourque noted the lack of sufficient nonprofit organizations and resources for mental health and substance abuse support in the community, attributing it to Dawson Creek’s smaller size compared to larger urban centers. Additionally, plans are underway to relocate the shelter to a new site, potentially accommodating up to 24 beds, to address community concerns effectively.
Mayor Darcy Dober expressed gratitude for the association’s efforts in addressing community feedback and implementing positive changes. He commended the ongoing collaboration and responsiveness to local needs, reflecting a commitment to enhancing services and support for vulnerable populations in Dawson Creek.
