Video footage has captured a disturbing incident where an explosion occurred from a package at the reception area of a building in the popular tourist destination, Istanbul.
The package, which raised suspicion, was delivered to the reception of a residential building in the bustling city of Istanbul and was left on the front desk. Surveillance footage shows a man trying to open the package, leading to a sudden explosion.
The explosion resulted in the package detonating and sending out a blast that injured the man and two building staff members, causing smoke and flames. The force of the blast scattered items from the reception desk across the ground floor, leaving debris, documents, and broken glass strewn around. After the smoke cleared, the two staff members fled the scene, while the man retreated, covering his mouth.
The reception area sustained significant damage, leaving a noticeable empty space where the package had been. According to a report by The Sun, CCTV footage showed a delivery driver leaving the package just moments before the explosion.
Both staff members sustained minor injuries from the blast. Emergency services quickly responded to the incident at a building in Istanbul’s Zeytinburnu district on January 11, with police, paramedics, and firefighters rushing to the scene.
The injured staff received initial treatment at the scene before being transported to a nearby hospital. They were later discharged from the hospital, after which the police cordoned off the building. Forensic teams arrived to investigate alongside law enforcement officers.
The cause of the explosion remains unknown. One of the injured staff members, Harun Arkin, recounted the incident, stating that the courier mentioned the recipient’s apartment but did not have a company logo on the package, raising suspicions. The resident of the apartment also wanted to inspect the package in the lobby due to concerns, leading to the explosion and causing an injury to Arkin’s eye.
Another staff member, Berra Köse, who was present during the explosion, mentioned that the apartment resident attempted to open the package in the lobby, triggering the incident. The staff were commended by the EVA Group, which manages security at the building, for preventing a potentially more severe outcome.
