Washing your face with hot water in the shower could be aging your skin faster than you think, according to an expert. Dr. Annette Phillips, a specialist aesthetics doctor at Forever Facial Aesthetics, warns that the heat can damage the skin’s protective barrier, leading to dryness, tightness, and accentuated fine lines, especially around the eyes and mouth.
Moreover, using body wash, shampoo, or conditioner on your face during showers can further harm the skin, as these products are not designed for facial skin care. This can result in dryness, sensitivity, and a rough complexion, often mistakenly perceived as premature aging.
To address these issues, Dr. Phillips recommends avoiding hot showers for face washing and refraining from using shower products on the face. Instead, opt for lukewarm water and a mild facial cleanser at the sink to prevent skin tightness post-cleansing. Moisturizing immediately after washing while the skin is damp aids in retaining moisture, promoting smoother and plumper skin.
In cases of dry or reactive skin, Dr. Phillips advises against introducing new products and suggests sticking to familiar skincare essentials to allow the skin to recover. Positive changes, such as reduced eczema-like flare-ups, can be observed within a week of adopting these habits. Making these simple adjustments can significantly enhance the appearance and feel of your skin.
