A cruel murderer has been sentenced to life imprisonment without parole for killing his estranged wife and desecrating her body. Zarbab Ali, 29, will spend the remainder of his days behind bars for the brutal death of Rachael Castillo, 25, with whom he shared two children. The tragic incident unfolded as Rachael was in the final stages of divorcing Ali and was alone at her sister’s residence.
Ali seized the opportunity when he dropped off their children at his parents’ house and returned to the apartment where Rachael was staying. He entered the unlocked apartment, ambushed Rachael in a dark hallway, and viciously stabbed her multiple times. Following the heinous act, Ali wrapped Rachael’s body in a blanket, attempted to clean the crime scene, and transported her to Littlerock, California, where he buried her in a shallow grave.
Upon discovering signs of a violent struggle at the apartment, Rachael’s sister alerted authorities. Despite her disappearance, Rachael’s personal items were found at the scene. Law enforcement recovered bloody evidence nearby and received reports of Ali’s presence in the vicinity. Subsequently, Ali returned to the burial site under the cover of night, unearthing Rachael’s remains to commit further despicable acts before reburial.
Rachel’s body was eventually located in a remote desert area near Littlerock on November 13, 2022. Ali was apprehended later that day and pleaded guilty to various charges, including murder and desecration of human remains. During the trial, prosecutors presented a video confession in which Ali admitted to his gruesome actions.
At the sentencing, Rachael’s loved ones delivered emotional statements, portraying her as more than just a victim but as a cherished mother, sister, and friend with aspirations for her future and her children. Speakers addressed Ali directly, condemning his cowardly and violent actions that forever altered the lives of two innocent children.
