Ah Hua, a 47-year-old Chinese content creator, shares makeup tutorials on social media as a form of rebellion stemming from her traumatic past. Following an abusive arranged marriage that led to a horrific acid attack by her ex-husband, leaving her blind in one eye and scarred, Hua found solace in recreating her missing eye using makeup after a digital inspiration on Douyin, the Chinese equivalent of TikTok.
Despite her initial struggles with drawing, Hua persevered with the help of her daughter, gradually improving her makeup skills to create a realistic eye. Her online tutorials have gained widespread popularity, aiming to inspire others who have faced similar challenges.
Hua’s personal struggles did not end with the acid attack. After meeting a supportive partner and becoming a mother, tragedy struck again when her husband was diagnosed with a terminal illness. Determined to provide for her family, Hua worked tirelessly to make the most of their time together.
The rise in acid attacks is a concerning trend, with a 75% increase in corrosive substance assaults in the UK from 2022 to 2023. Women are disproportionately affected by these attacks, highlighting the urgent need for increased awareness and prosecution of offenders. Victims of such violence are often reluctant to report due to fear of repercussions or trauma.
