“Chill Out with Season 2 of ‘North of North’ in Ice Cove”

Get ready to bundle up as the second season of “North of North” returns to the icy landscapes of Ice Cove.

The hit comedy series, a collaboration between APTN, CBC, and Netflix, follows Siaja (played by Anna Lambe), a young Inuk woman navigating life post a highly publicized breakup with her spouse.

Season 1 garnered global success, ranking in Netflix’s Top 10 in 33 countries and receiving accolades for its blend of witty humor and poignant themes.

“We cherish comedy with depth. We enjoy laughter, but we also embrace tears,” shared co-creator and executive producer Stacey Aglok MacDonald with CBC News.

The show received significant acclaim, clinching nine Canadian Screen Awards, including Best Comedy Series and Best Lead Performer in a Comedy for Lambe.

Reflecting on the unexpected triumph, co-creator and executive producer Alethea Arnaquq-Baril acknowledged the surprise at the scale of the show’s success.

The new season picks up from where Season 1 concluded, delving into Siaja’s journey as she navigates motherhood, work, dating, and complex family dynamics. The narrative is anchored in the Inuktitut principle of “pilimmaksarniq” — mastering skills through observation, practice, and perseverance.

Lambe shared insights into her character’s tumultuous experiences in the upcoming season, describing Siaja’s life as spiraling out of control despite her best efforts. The evolving dynamics between Siaja, her mother Neevee (Maika Harper), and estranged father Alistair (Jay Ryan) add layers of complexity to the storyline.

The creators emphasized the importance of an Inuit representation both in front of and behind the camera, ensuring authenticity and realism in the series.

Production challenges, including filming in the Arctic’s harsh conditions, contributed to the show’s grounded and enchanting atmosphere.

Season 2 promises unexpected plot twists, new characters, and deeper explorations of the existing characters’ lives, offering a mix of humor and heart in a bigger and bolder narrative.

The premiere of “North of North” Season 2 is set for September 1 on APTN+ in Canada, with a broader release on CBC TV, CBC Gem, and APTN TV on September 8. Following its Canadian debut, the season will be available globally on Netflix later in the fall.
