In the Donbas region of Ukraine, emergency workers and union members are facing daily challenges, including blackouts, missile attacks, and civilian casualties in various settings like homes, schools, hospitals, and kindergartens. Despite these adversities, Ukrainians are displaying resilience and a strong desire for peace without succumbing to Russian occupation.
During a recent visit to the Save Ukraine center, I encountered children who had been rescued from occupied territories, with a staggering one in ten reporting incidents of sexual abuse. Shockingly, over 20,000 children are believed to have been abducted by Russia, highlighting a distressing situation of widespread child abuse.
The hindrance posed by sanctioned Russian oligarch Roman Abramovich in transferring £2.5 billion from the sale of Chelsea FC for aiding Ukraine is deplorable. Abramovich is entangled in a legal dispute over frozen assets in Jersey, where his defense involves a member of the Conservative Shadow Cabinet, Lord Wolfson KC, who is representing him. This association with a sanctioned oligarch raises concerns about the normalization of dealings with Russian elites.
The involvement of Lord Wolfson and former Trump adviser Eric Herschmann in Abramovich’s legal battles underscores a troubling trend in engaging with Russian oligarchs. In light of the ongoing crisis in Ukraine, where children are being abducted and civilians are losing their lives, such associations with sanctioned individuals are alarming.
The failure to address the collaboration between Wolfson and Abramovich reflects poorly on the leadership under Kemi Badenoch within the Conservative party. It is imperative for accountability to prevail in this matter to uphold democratic values.
The Labour government should take decisive action by implementing emergency measures to prevent sanctioned oligarchs from exploiting the UK legal system and redirecting the nearly £30 billion frozen Russian assets in the UK towards aiding Ukraine. Standing in solidarity with Ukraine, it is crucial for concerned individuals to voice their support outside Tory Headquarters on Wednesday, January 7, at 5 pm.
Ukraine’s struggle for democracy demands unwavering support, and it is vital for all to stand united in solidarity with the nation during these challenging times.
