“From Cardiac Arrest to Champion: Victoria’s Remarkable Comeback”

Victoria Thomas was participating in a rigorous workout session at the fitness center when she suddenly experienced a cardiac arrest. Feeling drained after a weightlifting routine, the avid netball player collapsed on the floor, expressing her lack of energy and dizziness to a friend just moments before.

Paramedics quickly arrived at the scene and began CPR as Victoria’s heart failed to respond. After a harrowing 17 minutes, her heart miraculously started beating again. Despite the ordeal, she was rushed to Bristol Royal Infirmary, where she spent three days in a coma before being fitted with a defibrillator for future cardiac emergencies.

Following multiple cardiac arrests in the months that followed, Victoria was diagnosed with Danon disease, a rare genetic disorder affecting a minuscule number of people worldwide. Despite the challenges posed by the condition, she continued to lead an active lifestyle, even during her pregnancy, which exacerbated her heart issues.

After enduring a tumultuous period with deteriorating heart health post-pregnancy, Victoria was eventually diagnosed with end-stage heart failure. With time running out, she was placed on the urgent donor register, facing numerous disappointments before a suitable heart was finally found in April 2023.

Undergoing a successful heart transplant at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Birmingham, Victoria has since made an incredible recovery and returned to her active lifestyle, participating in sports and preparing for upcoming competitions. Grateful for the second chance at life, she cherishes each moment with her son and remains thankful to her donor’s family for their courageous decision.
