“Expert Tips for Safeguarding Skin in Winter”

As the new year begins, many parts of the UK are facing sub-zero temperatures, leading to potential skin issues. Dr. Donald Grant, a seasoned GP and senior clinical advisor at The Independent Pharmacy, has outlined eight expert recommendations to safeguard skin in severe weather conditions, particularly beneficial for individuals with skin conditions such as eczema.

Dr. Grant highlighted the detrimental effects of cold, dry winter weather on the skin, emphasizing how the combination of low temperatures and reduced humidity can deplete skin moisture, exacerbating conditions like eczema, acne, or psoriasis. To counter these challenges, he provided insights on protecting the skin during the cold season.

He advised against using hot water for baths or showers, suggesting warm or lukewarm water to prevent stripping the skin of essential oils, which helps maintain its natural moisture. Dr. Grant also suggested switching to a moisturizer suitable for cold, dry climates, containing ingredients like ceramides and hyaluronic acid to nourish and shield the skin from dryness.

For individuals with severely dry skin, he recommended using an emollient moisturizer to lock in moisture, followed by a hydrating serum to soothe and hydrate the skin. When it comes to skincare products, he advised avoiding harsh chemical cleansers and opting for gentle, milky lotions to prevent skin dryness and flare-ups.

Dr. Grant emphasized the importance of maintaining adequate hydration, especially during colder months, by increasing herbal tea consumption or drinking warm water to combat skin dryness and support overall skin health. Additionally, he stressed the significance of regular skin checks to detect any changes or abnormalities that may require dermatological evaluation.

Furthermore, he highlighted the necessity of using sunscreen even in winter to protect the skin from sun damage, reminding individuals to apply sunscreen to exposed areas like the face and hands before going outdoors and to reapply as needed.

By following these expert tips, individuals can better safeguard their skin during harsh winter conditions, ensuring its health and vitality. Dr. Grant, drawing from his extensive medical background and expertise, provides valuable insights to help individuals maintain healthy skin throughout the year.
