UK Mobile Networks Crack Down on Foreign Call Center Scams

Mobile networks like BT EE, VodafoneThree, and Virgin Media O2 are taking action to prevent foreign call centers from pretending to be banks in a new effort to combat scams. These networks have committed to enhancing their infrastructure over the next year to prevent foreign call centers from spoofing UK numbers.

Number spoofing, a tactic where scammers manipulate their caller ID to appear as a trusted entity, will be addressed through this crackdown. The initiative aims to clearly indicate when calls originate from overseas, making it easier for individuals to identify potential scam calls.

To bolster security measures, artificial intelligence (AI) will be utilized to detect and block suspicious calls and texts. Additionally, advanced call tracing technology will be provided to law enforcement agencies to assist in tracking down scammers nationwide.

Several prominent companies, including BT EE, Virgin Media O2, VodafoneThree, Tesco Mobile, Talk Talk, Sky, and Comms Council UK (CCUK), have joined forces to combat fraudulent activities.

Recent data reveals that 96% of mobile users determine whether to answer calls based on the displayed number, with a significant portion hesitant to pick up calls from unknown international numbers.

Lord Hanson, the Minister for Fraud, emphasized the deceptive nature of spoofed calls, highlighting the government’s commitment to combating fraud. The government’s mobile network upgrade aims to eliminate call spoofing within a year, thereby thwarting scammers’ attempts to defraud individuals.

Lord Hanson further stated that the government is intensifying efforts to safeguard victims and make the UK a challenging environment for scammers to operate.

Individuals are encouraged to report scams and fraud to Action Fraud by calling 0300 123 2040 or visiting the Action Fraud website. In Scotland, scams can be reported to Advice Direct Scotland at 0808 164 6000 or on their website. Police Scotland can also be contacted at 101 to report scams.

In case of suspected scam calls, individuals are advised to disconnect immediately and verify the caller’s contact information online. It is crucial not to return calls to numbers provided by potential scammers. If fraud is suspected, contacting the bank promptly is recommended, and changing compromised passwords is essential for security.

For suspected scam emails, forwarding them to report@phishing.gov.uk is advised, while scam text messages can be forwarded to 7726 at no cost. Suspicious websites can be reported to the National Cyber Security Centre.
