An 11-year-old boy uttered three alarming words following the alleged shooting of his father, who was found dead from a gunshot wound in a quiet Pennsylvania neighborhood. Douglas Dietz, 42, was fatally shot by his son Clayton after the father took away the boy’s Nintendo games console.
According to court documents, the tragic incident unfolded when Mr Dietz’s wife awoke to a loud noise and the smell of something resembling fireworks in the bedroom. The boy then entered the room and exclaimed, “Daddy’s dead,” while state troopers arriving at the scene heard Clayton confessing to his mother, “I killed Daddy.”
Clayton, who was marking his 11th birthday, reportedly became enraged after his father confiscated his Nintendo Switch a few days earlier. His mother, Jillian, discovered the situation only when she turned on the lights and saw blood on the sheets.
Despite Jillian’s efforts to perform CPR on Mr Dietz while awaiting emergency services, he was pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics. Jillian revealed to the police that the family had celebrated Clayton’s birthday the previous evening but a disagreement arose when they insisted he go to bed.
The court affidavit indicated that Clayton located the family gun in a locked drawer, accessed it using a key, loaded bullets into it, and then shot his father after removing the safety notch. The boy admitted to the police that he had not considered the consequences of his actions. Clayton was arrested on the day of the incident and charged with criminal homicide, with a court hearing scheduled for January 22.
Reports from local media revealed that Clayton’s parents had sought help for their son due to his escalating behavioral issues, including autism, sexual harassment, physical aggression, and theft. Despite their efforts, assistance was reportedly denied as the boy did not meet the necessary criteria. Neighbors described the Dietz family as kind and reserved, expressing shock over the tragic events.
Following the incident, the Susquenita School District in Perry County issued a statement offering support to students affected by the tragedy, acknowledging the potential impact on the community.
