UK Government Stands Firm on Handling Hunger Strikes

The Prisons Minister, James Timpson, stated that Justice Secretary David Lammy will not engage with pro-Palestine prisoners who are on a hunger strike. Timpson emphasized that the government’s policy is to treat all prisoners equally without special privileges. He highlighted that the prison system has effective measures in place to handle hunger strikes, with more than 200 incidents annually over the past five years.

Pressure is mounting on ministers regarding the welfare of the hunger-striking inmates. Eight activists from Palestine Action, accused of offenses on behalf of the group, are on a hunger strike while awaiting trial, with some requiring hospitalization.

Supporters reveal that some prisoners have been refusing food for over 45 days, leading to concerns about their health. Dr. James Smith, an emergency physician and lecturer at University College London, warned that some hunger strikers are in critical condition.

Despite calls from 51 MPs and peers for Lammy to meet the prisoners’ lawyers, Timpson reaffirmed that all prisoners are treated the same under the justice system’s principles. He emphasized the importance of the separation of powers and judicial independence.

Timpson encouraged the hunger strikers to cooperate with health professionals and resume eating to improve their condition. He assured that the prison system, in collaboration with NHS partners, is well-equipped to handle hunger strikes effectively.

Regarding the issue of force-feeding, Timpson stated that healthcare professionals make decisions on supporting hunger strikers either in prison or hospital based on medical considerations.

In response to the situation, Independent MP Jeremy Corbyn urged the Ministry of Justice to address the welfare and medical needs of all prisoners, including those participating in protests. John McDonnell proposed the appointment of an independent mediator to facilitate dialogue between hunger strikers and authorities.

Commons Leader Sir Alan Campbell emphasized the government’s focus on prisoner welfare and expressed willingness to find a resolution to the situation. He assured that efforts are being made to address the concerns raised during the parliamentary debate.
