Deb Perelman, the founder of the renowned food blog Smitten Kitchen, is celebrating the site’s 20th anniversary this summer. Perelman, who has always aimed to connect with her audience wherever they are, has actively engaged on various social media platforms such as Twitter, Instagram, and TikTok while directing followers back to her website for recipes and stories. However, she is now encountering a new challenge posed by AI-generated summaries.
Expressing her surprise, Perelman noted instances where AI-generated blurbs featuring excerpts from her recipes appeared in the top search results without her consent. This has prompted her to seek protective measures against AI interference on her site. Notably, Google recently introduced an innovative search feature called “AI Mode,” which has garnered over a billion monthly users, shifting the search experience towards conversational interactions akin to AI chatbots like ChatGPT.
Furthermore, Google has started favoring comprehensive AI summaries over direct website links, allowing users to obtain information without leaving the search engine’s main page. This trend reflects the broader transformation of the web to cater more towards automated bots that extract data from websites. As a result, traditional human web traffic has been on the decline, impacting various sectors such as retail, software, IT, and finance websites.
In response to these changes, digital marketing experts like Hamzah Khadim emphasize the importance of adapting websites to align with AI preferences. While SEO remains crucial for visibility, the focus is shifting towards Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) to provide AI with relevant information and enhance a site’s credibility. This strategy may involve adding substantial text to sections like “About Us” to cater to AI algorithms, which play a significant role in determining a site’s trustworthiness.
The rise of AI bots accessing web content raises concerns about the sustainability of content creation and funding models. Content creators relying on ad revenue or subscriptions face uncertainties as AI-driven bots increasingly replace human visitors. Organizations like Wikimedia Enterprise have struck deals with AI companies to offset the costs associated with bots accessing their data. This shift has prompted discussions among media companies about reevaluating their relationships with search engines like Google to maintain control over their content and revenue streams.
While the evolving landscape poses challenges for website creators, the debate continues on how to uphold an open web ecosystem that values diverse perspectives. Perelman underscores the unique value of individual creators’ perspectives, emphasizing that the context and authenticity they bring to their content cannot be replicated by AI-generated summaries alone.
