Despite Bourdain’s iconic status and tragic passing in 2018, Johnson expressed ease in sharing his story.
Johnson initially had no intention of making a film about Bourdain, but a meeting with actor Dominic Sessa, who plays the lead role, sparked a change of heart. Sessa’s perspective on various issues resonated with Johnson, leading them to explore these themes together in the movie.
The film, drawing from Bourdain’s book “Kitchen Confidential,” focuses on one summer in Provincetown, Mass., where Bourdain began his culinary journey. By concentrating on Bourdain’s early years, Johnson sidestepped the pressure of portraying the mature and revered Bourdain that many fans knew.
Through the narrative, the movie delves into Bourdain’s childhood complexities, his relationships, and his transition into adulthood. Johnson emphasized that this approach made Bourdain’s story more relatable and valuable to his admirers.
“Tony” is set to hit theaters in Canada on August 14, inviting viewers to delve into a different side of Anthony Bourdain’s life through the eyes of the filmmaker and lead actor.
