A man, William Ian Southey, passed away at the age of 73, leaving behind a substantial £1 million inheritance for his online partner, Kyle Stuart Jackson, who was designated as the will’s executor. Shockingly, investigations later revealed that Kyle was a fictitious persona fabricated online.
William, hailing from Melbourne, had turned to virtual relationships after losing his partner of forty years. He connected with Kyle in early 2022 and had purportedly planned to tie the knot with his cyber lover. However, posthumously, the courts invalidated the existence of the online persona.
Concerns about Kyle’s authenticity arose when legal representatives encountered difficulties in confirming his identity. William’s former spouse, Kaye Moseley, who was wed to him from 1976 to 1989, sought court intervention to ascertain the reality of Kyle, which ultimately proved futile.
After William’s demise in 2022, a two-year endeavor by solicitors to authenticate Kyle’s identity through various means, including phone calls, emails, and a flagged forged passport, ensued. An investigation into a cheque issued to Kyle for the acquisition of art pieces also uncovered inconsistencies. The court was informed that the cheque was invalid upon verification by the Toronto-Dominion Bank.
Associate Judge Caroline Anne Goulden concluded that the individual associated with Kyle Stuart Jackson did not correspond to any verifiable entity. This revelation prompted William’s ex-wife’s legal representative, Rachael Hocking, to caution the public about the risks associated with online relationships and financial scams.
The estate, including a residence in the Melbourne suburb of Kew sold for £1.25 million ($2.5 million), was bequeathed to the non-existent Kyle, whose sole communication with William was through online channels. This unfortunate incident serves as a cautionary tale, emphasizing the importance of vigilance in digital interactions and financial dealings.
