Siblings who were separated following their mother’s tragic murder by their father have reunited after five decades of being apart. Theresa Fazzani, 59, and her younger sister Janet Brocklhurst, 57, were forever changed in December 1973 when they discovered their mother, Helen Barnes, deceased in their home. Their father, Malcolm Barnes, subsequently confessed to the murder and served a nine-year sentence for the crime.
Theresa and Janet were initially separated when Theresa learned that Malcolm was her stepfather, leading to her being raised by her biological father while Janet and the younger siblings were adopted. After more than 50 years without contact, Theresa took the initiative in July 2025 to search for her sisters through a Facebook group specializing in reconnecting family members.
Within 48 hours, the group’s researchers located Theresa’s sisters, facilitating an emotional reunion. Since then, they have visited each other’s homes and maintained regular communication. Reflecting on the past, Theresa shared her harrowing experience of being misled by her father after her mother’s murder, leading to a difficult upbringing. Both sisters had contemplated reaching out to each other over the years but were hindered by fear and anxiety.
The sisters, now reunited, have been piecing together their shared history, which had been obscured due to sealed files. They also recently visited their mother’s grave for the first time, bringing a sense of closure after years of separation and grief. Theresa expressed her relief and gratitude at finally reuniting with her sister, describing the experience as indescribably fulfilling. Janet echoed the sentiment, emphasizing the incredible support and connection they now share.
