Britons residing in 15 different areas are being advised to assemble an “emergency” pack following the issuance of additional weather alerts by the UK’s Met Office. Currently, warnings for snow and ice cover extensive regions of England, Wales, Scotland, and Northern Ireland, with new alerts now in place for rainfall.
The initial yellow rain advisory encompasses Northern Ireland and is set to be enforced from 9 pm today until the same time tomorrow. Residents in counties such as Antrim, Armagh, Down, Fermanagh, Londonderry, and Tyrone are cautioned about potential flooding and electricity interruptions due to the anticipated 30mm to 60mm of rainfall.
A separate rain warning has been put forth for the southern parts of Scotland, including Dumfries and Galloway, East Ayrshire, South Ayrshire, and South Lanarkshire, effective from 2 am tomorrow until midnight. Higher terrain could experience up to 90mm of rainfall, increasing the risk of areas being isolated due to flooding.
In northern Scotland, a third yellow rain alert has been issued, covering regions like Perth and Kinross, Stirling, Highland, Argyll and Bute, and West Dunbartonshire. Expected rainfall ranges from 60mm to 110mm, with locations such as Skye, Lochaber, Argyll, and the Trossachs facing heightened flooding threats due to melting snow.
All three warnings emphasize the importance of preparing a “flood plan” and an “emergency flood kit.” They also recommend staying informed on road conditions, public transportation schedules, and stocking up on essentials like torches, batteries, and a mobile phone power pack to better manage potential power outages.
David Morgan, SEPA Flood Duty Manager, highlighted the escalating flood risk as temperatures rise post recent cold spells. Potential impacts include flooding of low-lying areas, roads, and individual properties.
