Iran’s supreme leader has criticized Donald Trump for the harm and negative portrayal he has directed towards the Iranian people during recent anti-government demonstrations. Trump had previously threatened action against Iran if it harmed protesters but has since taken a more reconciliatory stance, citing no executions taking place.
In his first post since January 12 on his Persian-language X account, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei accused protesters of being influenced by foreign elements, including Trump and other “foreign terrorists.” Khamenei attributed the protests to what he called “American sedition,” alleging that the US sought to subdue Iran.
Blaming individuals associated with Israel and the US, Khamenei stated that they caused significant harm and casualties during the unrest. Trump, on the other hand, had warned Iran of potential consequences if they harmed protesters, signaling readiness for action.
Despite White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt mentioning that all options were being considered, Iran’s closure of airspace hinted at an imminent strike. However, Trump opted against military action following advice from advisors, who questioned the effectiveness of strikes in toppling the Iranian regime and expressed concerns over military capabilities.
Acknowledging Iran’s decision not to execute political prisoners, Trump expressed gratitude for the restraint. Tehran has seen a return to normalcy with no recent protests, although an internet blackout persists. The death toll, according to the Human Rights Activists News Agency, stands at 3,090, marking a significant loss of life reminiscent of past unrest in Iran.
