Ukraine’s Vladyslav Heraskevych has been disqualified from the Winter Olympics by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) for his insistence on wearing a helmet adorned with images of 24 deceased Ukrainian athletes who lost their lives in Russia’s invasion. Heraskevych, a skeleton pilot, defied the IOC’s directive against the helmet, leading to his disqualification and loss of Olympics accreditation.
Despite being informed that the helmet was not permitted, the 27-year-old wore it during a training session, prompting the IOC to take action. Heraskevych, expressing his loyalty to the fallen athletes, plans to appeal the decision to the Court of Arbitration for Sport, stating that not wearing the helmet would be a betrayal.
His father and coach, Mykhailo, was visibly emotional upon hearing the news at the venue. The IOC justified its decision by citing Heraskevych’s refusal to comply with their guidelines on athlete expression. The IOC had engaged in multiple discussions with Heraskevych to find a resolution but ultimately deemed the helmet a political statement.
Kirsty Coventry, the IOC president, personally met with Heraskevych in an attempt to resolve the issue but was unsuccessful. Coventry expressed disappointment at the outcome, emphasizing the desire to see Heraskevych compete and acknowledging the powerful message of remembrance conveyed by the helmet. However, the IOC maintained its stance on the matter, stating that mourning is interpreted differently worldwide.
As the competition neared, Heraskevych appealed for the ban to be lifted and requested an apology from the IOC, arguing that the situation had diverted attention from the athletes and competitions. Despite his efforts, the IOC stood firm on its decision, underscoring the varying cultural perceptions of mourning.
