During her visit to Finland and Norway, Cooper called for enhanced security cooperation among allies to counter hostile actions in the Arctic, particularly in light of recent tensions surrounding control of the High North following Donald Trump’s discussions about Greenland. The melting ice caps, leading to the opening of new shipping routes and exposure of valuable resources, have intensified geopolitical competition in the area.
Russia’s efforts to militarize the Arctic and utilize it for strategic purposes, including the operation of its shadow fleet for resource transportation, have raised concerns among Western powers. In a recent incident, the UK supported the US coastguard in intercepting the Bella 1 tanker near British waters.
Cooper affirmed the UK’s commitment to Arctic security, emphasizing the collaborative efforts with allies to strengthen defenses and deter potential threats to British interests and infrastructure.
