Legendary snooker commentator John Virgo, known as the voice of the sport, has passed away at the age of 79. Virgo, a successful player who won the UK Championship in 1979, died in Spain, where he resided. World Seniors Snooker chairman Jason Francis confirmed the news, expressing heartfelt condolences to Virgo’s family.
Virgo’s legacy in snooker was highlighted by his iconic catchphrase, “Where’s the cue ball going?” which added to his legendary status. He transitioned from a playing career to become the sport’s most renowned commentator, earning a place in the World Snooker Tour Hall of Fame. His flamboyant waistcoats and trick shots further endeared him to fans.
Colleagues and fellow snooker players, including Ronnie O’Sullivan, Stephen Hendry, Shaun Murphy, and Neil Robertson, paid tribute to Virgo, praising his talent and contribution to the sport. His impact extended beyond the snooker community, as comedian Jim Davidson fondly recalled their successful partnership on the popular show, Big Break.
Virgo’s move to Spain with his wife, Rosie Ries, in 2020 aimed to alleviate his long-standing neck injury. Despite his gambling struggles, Virgo’s dedication to snooker and his enduring presence in the sport will be dearly missed. He is survived by his son, Gary, and daughter, Brook-Leah, from previous marriages.
