Millions of broadband users in the UK are familiar with a common issue when trying to access the internet. Online congestion, a frustrating problem that typically impacts households during the evening, occurs when multiple users are simultaneously streaming content, downloading files, and engaging in video calls.
During daytime hours, when fewer people are online, download speeds tend to remain fast and stable. However, as evening approaches and more households connect to the network after work, local networks can become overwhelmed, leading to noticeable slowdowns in speed.
Broadband functions similarly to a motorway – the more users on it simultaneously, the slower the connection. This explains why many households experience a significant decrease in performance between 7 pm and 11 pm.
A recent study by Broadband Genie revealed the UK areas most affected by slowdowns during peak hours, with Wigan (WN1) ranking as the top location. According to the report, broadband users in Wigan witness a drop in average download speeds from 167Mbps during off-peak times to just 75Mbps in the evening, representing a 55% decrease.
Other areas significantly impacted by evening congestion include Galashiels (TD1), Harrogate (HG1), Exeter (EX1), and Rochester (ME1).
Not all regions in the UK experience slowdowns during peak hours. In fact, some areas observe an enhancement in performance. Newport emerged as the best-performing location in the study, followed by Oxford, Glasgow, Blackburn, and Cambridge.
Broadband Genie commented, “Have you ever noticed your broadband slowing down in the evening? Just like our roads, internet networks can experience congestion. We analyzed 144,509 broadband speed tests to pinpoint the locations where performance fluctuates the most during peak times. Customers in Wigan saw the most significant decline, with speeds dropping by 55% during busy hours.”
The report also highlighted regional variations across the UK, with Scotland ranking highest overall for improved broadband performance in the evenings. Conversely, the South West experienced a notable decrease in average speeds by approximately 15% during peak periods compared to daytime performance.
Broadband experts recommend several ways for households to enhance their home connection. Placing a router in an open, central location away from obstructions can improve signal quality. Additionally, providers like Virgin Media suggest regularly rebooting routers to resolve temporary network issues.
