Man killed as tree crashes into caravan during Storm Goretti in Cornwall

A tragic incident occurred in the Mawgan area of Helston on Thursday evening when a man in his 50s lost his life after a tree fell on a caravan due to Storm Goretti’s fierce winds in Cornwall. The man’s death, as confirmed by Devon and Cornwall Police, is not considered suspicious, and his family has been notified.

The Met Office issued a rare red warning for wind in parts of the South West on Thursday, along with alerts for snow, ice, wind, and rain across the UK. Emergency services responded to the scene promptly after the tree incident, and efforts were made to safely remove the tree and conduct further investigations.

Although yellow warnings for snow and ice remain effective in various regions of the UK, the Met Office anticipates improving weather conditions with some sunny intervals on Saturday. However, northern areas and Wales may experience wintry showers and snow on elevated terrains.

Despite a brief period of calmer weather on Saturday, a new weather front is expected to bring more snow on Sunday, potentially causing disruptions. Met Office Chief Forecaster Steve Willington warned of additional snow accumulation in Scotland and northern England on Sunday, with ongoing ice risks due to low temperatures. Central and southern England, as well as Wales, are likely to see the snowfall as rain on Sunday.
