Reform UK has come under fire for allegedly neglecting motorists, with recent analysis revealing that Councils led by Reform have been the least efficient in addressing pothole issues. This criticism coincides with the introduction of a new traffic light system by the Government to address potholes, where a significant number of Reform-led Local Highway Authorities have received a ‘Red’ rating, indicating the lowest performance level.
The Department for Transport (DfT) has launched a mapping tool to assess 154 local highway authorities based on road conditions and the utilization of government funding for road maintenance. Among the Councils under scrutiny, three Reform Councils – Derbyshire, Leicestershire, and West Northamptonshire – have received a ‘Red’ rating, accounting for a substantial portion of the Reform-led Councils assessed. The evaluation also highlights a deficiency in addressing potholes by Tory Councils, with nearly 20% of their Councils receiving a ‘Red’ rating.
Anna Turley MP, Chair of the Labour Party, criticized Reform Councils for their poor performance in fixing potholes, emphasizing the Labour Party’s commitment to supporting motorists. The data was collected prior to Reform taking control of the local authorities, with authorities like Cumberland, Cumbria; Bolton, Greater Manchester; Leicestershire; Suffolk; and Kensington and Chelsea receiving a ‘Red’ rating. The DfT announced a dedicated support program worth £300,000 for ‘Red’ authorities to improve their practices.
In contrast, Councils like Essex, Wiltshire, Coventry, Leeds, and Darlington have been classified as ‘Green’ for their efficient handling of road maintenance. The Government has allocated £7.3 billion for local road maintenance funding, aiming to enhance road conditions and reduce repair costs for drivers.
Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander emphasized the government’s commitment to improving road infrastructure, highlighting the increased funding for local highway authorities. A spokesperson for Reform UK defended their efforts in addressing potholes, citing progress made in areas like Derbyshire. Despite challenges inherited from previous administrations, Reform Councils are dedicated to enhancing highway services and rectifying long-standing issues.
