Global temperatures experienced a slight decrease in 2025, yet concerns persist regarding the ongoing impacts of climate change on communities worldwide. The welfare of wildlife remains a significant worry, with numerous species facing threats due to changing habitats and declining environmental conditions.
Despite these challenges, various organizations and activists are dedicated to establishing safer environments for animals globally. A key approach involves constructing infrastructure that facilitates the movement of wildlife, allowing them to navigate man-made barriers securely.
One notable initiative is the Wallis Annenberg Wildlife Crossing, currently being built northwest of Los Angeles. Upon completion, it will become the world’s largest animal crossing. This £68 million megaproject, spanning over the 101 Freeway in Agoura Hills, has been in the planning stages for decades.
Construction work commenced in early 2022, with the original target for the bridge to open in early 2026. However, due to adverse weather conditions causing delays, the launch date has been rescheduled to November 2026. Beth Pratt, a project spokesperson, attributed the setbacks to storms impacting the construction progress.
Although the project completion has been postponed by nearly a year, there is optimism that its benefits for local wildlife will endure. Projections indicate a significant reduction in animal fatalities caused by vehicle collisions, similar to the success of a comparable crossing near Salt Lake City, which decreased animal-to-vehicle accidents by 77%.
Beth, who also serves as California’s regional director for the National Wildlife Federation, emphasized the importance of finding solutions to protect wildlife populations. The bridge honors Wallis Annenberg, a philanthropist who played a vital role in the project before passing away at the age of 86.
In addition to her environmental advocacy, Wallis was a strong supporter of science and education initiatives. Following her demise, her family expressed their admiration for her resilience in the face of cancer, highlighting her enduring spirit and wisdom that will be cherished forever.
