“Call The Midwife’s Jenny Agutter Battles Lingering Effects of Shingles”

Jenny Agutter, known for her role as Sister Julienne in “Call The Midwife,” has given an update on her health just before the anticipated return of the show. Despite being in good shape before the 2020 Christmas special, the actress was unexpectedly hit by shingles.

Although shingles typically lasts up to four weeks, Jenny continues to experience discomfort even five years later. She described the sensation as an itchy, bruised feeling concentrated on one side of her face, spanning from her eyebrow to her forehead.

Despite the lingering effects of shingles, Jenny, a star of “Red Dwarf,” remains thankful for her overall well-being. She expressed gratitude for being able to engage in activities like walking, having a functioning body, enjoying meals, even though she humorously noted the inevitable morning stiffness when getting out of bed or standing up from a low chair.

Reflecting on her shingles ordeal during an interview with Woman’s Weekly Magazine, Jenny recalled the pain and discomfort she endured. She mentioned that stress could have triggered the onset of the condition, sharing her experience with nerve inflammation in her neck, resulting in a rash, pain on one side of her head, and sensitivity to light for an extended period.

According to the NHS, early signs of shingles may include a rash typically appearing on one side of the body, potentially on areas like the face, eyes, or genitals. If shingles symptoms are suspected, seeking advice from a pharmacist or NHS 111 is recommended.

Having celebrated her 73rd birthday in December following the conclusion of filming for the latest series of “Call The Midwife,” Jenny expressed her ongoing enthusiasm for work. She emphasized her enjoyment of the collaborative nature of projects, the camaraderie on set, and the gratification of seeing the behind-the-scenes work come together.

The new season of “Call The Midwife” commences in 1971, featuring characters embracing Women’s Lib by staging a bra-burning event outside Nonnatus House. The premiere episode airs tonight on BBC One at 8pm.
