The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) has activated Cold Weather Payments in approximately 250 postcode areas across England and Wales. This action coincides with the Met Office issuing multiple winter weather alerts for the upcoming week. More than 500,000 households are set to benefit from these payments, receiving £25 each to assist with heating expenses.
The payments have been initiated in a total of 246 postcode regions, including locations such as Greater Manchester, Cumbria, Staffordshire, Gloucestershire, and parts of Wales and Northern Ireland. Eligible postcodes for today’s payments can be found on an interactive map provided.
These Cold Weather Payments are allocated to individuals in England and Wales receiving various benefits. While Northern Ireland operates a similar scheme, heating bill support in Scotland is provided annually without being tied to specific cold periods. This winter, £25 payments have been activated in 697 postcode areas, with 18 districts receiving two payments due to prolonged cold conditions.
The latest round of payments is expected to reach approximately 532,000 households, with a significant portion located in Greater Manchester. The total cost of these Cold Weather Payments is estimated to be £13.3 million. Criteria for triggering a payment includes average temperatures below zero for seven consecutive days, with forecasters predicting a cold spell leading into the New Year.
Around 3.9 million individuals are eligible for these payments under the DWP scheme, with 1.2 million recipients of Pensions Credit. Beneficiaries of Pension Credit, Income Support, JSA, ESA, Universal Credit, and Support for Mortgage Interest may qualify for Cold Weather Payments, although not all recipients automatically receive them. Detailed eligibility information can be found on the GOV.UK website.
The £25 payments are directly deposited into recipients’ bank accounts within 14 working days, with a payment reference containing the National Insurance number followed by ‘DWP CWP’. No application is required for this payment, which is currently being triggered by various weather stations across different regions.
