“Google Partners with Back Market to Revive Old Laptops”

With the end of official support for Windows 10 almost half a year ago, numerous laptops are now at risk due to the lack of essential security updates. This situation leaves them vulnerable to potential cyber threats and malware attacks. While some newer devices can be upgraded to Windows 11 through Microsoft’s update program, older PCs often do not meet the necessary system requirements, presenting users with a challenging dilemma.

Users of unsupported laptops have a few options available to them: they can continue using their current devices without updates, opt to pay for extended updates (ESUs), or choose to replace their laptops entirely with new ones pre-installed with Windows 11.

An alternative solution has emerged for aging PCs that can prolong their usability and prevent them from being discarded. Google has partnered with refurbished electronics retailer Back Market to introduce a USB kit that rejuvenates old laptops using ChromeOS Flex software.

ChromeOS Flex serves as a lightweight operating system that can be installed on many older computers, effectively transforming them into devices similar to Chromebooks. Once installed, users have access to various services such as Chrome, Gmail, Docs, and the Android app store, offering an economical alternative to purchasing a new laptop.

While ChromeOS Flex has always been available as a free download from Google, the new USB kits aim to simplify the installation process. Users can even test the system directly from the USB drive before proceeding with a full installation. The popularity of these kits is evident as they are currently sold out.

In a blog post, Google stated, “Last October marked a turning point for hundreds of millions of computers as Microsoft Windows 10 reached its end of support, putting these devices at risk of becoming obsolete. This left many users facing a tough choice: invest in a new device or continue using an insecure and outdated one.”

Google’s collaboration with Back Market offers the ChromeOS Flex USB Kit at a cost of around £3, with the USB stick being reusable, contributing to the reduction of electronic waste. Despite the high demand, the item is currently out of stock on Back Market’s website.

Aside from revitalizing old laptops, Google highlights the environmental advantages of ChromeOS Flex. By extending the lifespan of existing devices, the software helps to prevent hardware from ending up in landfills and reduces the carbon footprint associated with manufacturing new laptops. Additionally, ChromeOS is noted for consuming 19% less energy on average compared to similar systems.

ChromeOS Flex is compatible with those considering the switch.
