A woman has opened up about a unique facial condition that causes her eye to protrude when she chews, but she has opted out of corrective surgery. Marion Karawia, aged 35, first experienced her eye bulging at the age of five while having dinner, catching the attention of her parents.
Following a medical consultation, Marion was diagnosed with Marcus Gunn Syndrome (MGS), a condition where the movement of her jaw triggers her left eyelid to elevate due to nerve reconfiguration. Marion shared that dealing with this condition during her upbringing affected her self-assurance, especially when interacting with peers at school or going on dates.
As a co-founder of a skincare business, Marion mentioned that she was offered surgical intervention to rectify the issue but decided against it, expressing her fondness for her unique trait and embracing it as part of her identity.
Reflecting on her past experiences, Marion, based in Los Angeles, described the challenges she faced during her teenage years and early adulthood due to MGS, causing a strain on her confidence.
Marion disclosed, “It was a struggle growing up as a teenager. When my jaw moves, it appears as though my eye is bulging, but it is simply my eyelid moving noticeably.”
She went on to explain, “While surgery was an option, as it does not cause discomfort or impact my vision, it would primarily be for cosmetic reasons. I realized that I did not feel compelled to alter myself and portray it as a significant issue. I have embraced my growth, accepted myself as I am, and appreciate my uniqueness.”
Marion highlighted that MGS is a congenital condition she was born with, making her the sole individual in her family with this condition. Despite not encountering others with MGS aside from those she has connected with through sharing her story, Marion detailed the emotional struggle she endured over about 15 years to accept her condition.
She shared, “I felt distinct from others. Beyond the physical aspect, it also had a profound mental impact on me, as it was often challenging.”
Moreover, Marion disclosed that her social life, particularly dating experiences, were influenced by her condition, necessitating efforts to conceal it while eating to avoid drawing attention to it.
Marion, now happily married to her husband, Karim, revealed his minimal notice of her condition, emphasizing his acceptance and normalization of it in their relationship.
She expressed, “I asked him if he ever noticed it, and he acknowledged it but never considered it a significant issue. Although he admitted it was a unique feature he had not encountered before.”
By sharing her journey on social media under the handle marionsworldd, Marion aims to raise awareness and empower individuals living with MGS to boost their self-esteem. She emphasized the impact of seemingly simple activities like eating on people’s lives and encouraged others to embrace their uniqueness.
Marion concluded, “It’s remarkable how something as routine as eating can have such profound effects on individuals. Over time, I learned to accept it as a part of me whenever I move my jaw. I share my story to support those who have faced bullying, embarrassment, or insecurity due to MGS or any physical condition.”
She added, “You are visible, you are unique, and you are cherished. I cherish my MGS; it is a part of me and will always be.”
