Thousands of households in the UK are set to benefit from a £150 credit provided by their energy supplier this month. Utilita has already started distributing the Warm Home Discount to smart prepay customers, aiming to complete payments for all eligible households by the end of January.
The Warm Home Discount, valued at £150, is directly credited to the electricity account of eligible households, rather than being issued as a cash payment. To qualify for this benefit, individuals must have been receiving specific benefits on the qualifying date, which for this winter was August 24, 2025.
Residents in England or Wales will automatically receive the Warm Home Discount, while in Scotland, only those receiving the Guarantee Credit element of Pension Credit will receive the payment automatically. Other eligible individuals must apply manually through their energy supplier. Notably, there is no Warm Home Discount scheme in Northern Ireland.
The Department for Energy Security and Net Zero (DESNZ) has announced the removal of the high energy use criteria for the Warm Home Discount in England and Wales. Previously, applicants had to demonstrate high energy costs to qualify for benefits other than Pension Credit, but this requirement has been eliminated.
DESNZ estimates that the number of households benefiting from the discount could increase by 2.7 million, reaching a total of 6.1 million households. This initiative comes at a time when energy bills have risen once again, with the Ofgem price cap for a typical dual fuel household paying by direct debit increasing from £1,755 to £1,758.
While the Ofgem price cap limits charges for gas and electricity units, as well as standing charges, it does not impose a total cap on energy costs. Individuals on a standard variable rate tariff are covered by the price cap, but their bills are still based on actual energy consumption.
