“UK and Greece Forge Pact to Combat Human Trafficking”

A groundbreaking migration agreement has been reached between the United Kingdom and Greece to combat human trafficking effectively. UK Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper signed the pact in Athens, emphasizing the importance of disrupting smuggling operations. As part of the agreement, the UK will offer training to Greek authorities to disrupt the use of small boats in dangerous Channel crossings.

In addition to the collaboration with Greece, the UK government is intensifying efforts in North Africa to prevent perilous crossings into Europe. Cooper announced increased funding for initiatives in Algeria, Egypt, and Tunisia that aim to provide jobs locally to dissuade potential migrants from embarking on dangerous journeys.

Cooper, in a meeting with Greek counterpart George Gerapetritis, highlighted the shared priority of addressing illegal migration and targeting criminal smuggling networks worth millions of pounds. The focus is on combating organized immigration crime, which poses a global threat, leading to a comprehensive government strategy.

Efforts to combat illegal migration include enhanced cooperation between Greek authorities and the National Crime Agency (NCA). Recent joint operations resulted in the dismantling of an Athens-based network involved in migrant smuggling and document fraud. The operation led to multiple arrests, the closure of a forgery lab, and the seizure of counterfeit documents and equipment.

To support development and stability in North Africa, a funding of £1.5 million will be allocated for projects under the North Africa Migration and Development (NAMAD) program. This initiative has already benefitted over 17,000 individuals through training and health and social services.
