The father of the owner of the Swiss bar where 40 individuals lost their lives in a New Year fire has expressed that his son holds accountability for the tragic incident. Jacques Moretti’s father, Jean, made these remarks as his son and daughter-in-law were confronted by prosecutors on charges related to the event including manslaughter by negligence, bodily harm by negligence, and arson by negligence.
Mr. Moretti Snr acknowledged his son’s responsibility due to his ownership of the establishment but emphasized that his guilt is yet to be determined. He stressed that they are prepared to face the justice system without evasion. Jean described Jacques as a diligent worker profoundly impacted by the fire, highlighting that their residence is now under police protection amidst growing public outrage over the calamity which also resulted in 116 injuries.
Addressing reporters, Jean emphasized Jacques’ integrity and commitment, stating that the family is devastated by the loss and tragedy. Jacques Moretti was detained pending trial following questioning by prosecutors, while his wife Jessica underwent interrogation but was subsequently released.
On a day of national mourning in Switzerland, Mrs. Moretti tearfully expressed her condolences and sorrow for the victims and those affected by the tragedy. The incident, which claimed 40 lives, including 20 children as young as 14, occurred at Le Constellation bar in the ski resort of Crans-Montana.
In an earlier statement, the couple conveyed their devastation and pledged full cooperation with the investigations. Prosecutors suspect that the fire originated in the bar’s basement when champagne bottles with attached sparklers ignited sound insulation foam on the ceiling, potentially causing a rapid spread of flames.
The ongoing inquiry will scrutinize the accountability of both the bar proprietors and the authorities, acknowledging the absence of fire safety inspections at the bar since 2019. With victims of 19 nationalities, including 83 individuals still hospitalized, the tragic event has sparked national grief and introspection.
At an official memorial service, young survivors shared poignant accounts of the night, moving dignitaries and attendees to tears. The speeches underscored the collective trauma and resilience of the survivors, urging solidarity and perseverance in the face of adversity.
As investigations proceed and the community mourns the lives lost, the tragedy serves as a poignant reminder of the importance of safety regulations and accountability in public establishments.
