Users of various devices, including Samsung models, are facing screen flickering issues when using the Gmail app, causing text to disappear or appear as blank white boxes. Frustrated individuals have turned to social media to express their grievances, with one user highlighting the problem on folding phones like the Samsung Fold. Complaints have also surfaced on Google’s support forums, with one user detailing unsuccessful attempts to resolve the flickering problem by clearing cache and restarting the device.
Google’s product expert, Kimiya Kitani, has identified the root cause of the issue to be related to Android System WebView, a vital component enabling apps to display web content within the app interface. Kitani mentioned that certain devices, particularly Samsung tablets, are encountering intermittent challenges with Android System WebView, which has been brought to Google’s attention for resolution.
Although the exact number of affected users remains unknown, reports indicate that Samsung foldable devices such as the Galaxy Z Fold series and specific Galaxy tablets are among those most impacted. As a temporary workaround, Kitani advises users to rotate their devices as a potential solution to stop the screen flickering. By opening emails in portrait mode, rotating the device to landscape mode until the display stabilizes, and then reverting to portrait mode, users may mitigate the issue while awaiting a permanent fix from Google.
