A woman who struggled with a sugar addiction and was jeopardizing her health by overeating reveals that quitting sugar abruptly helped her shed seven stone. Kristy McCammon’s daily routine once included indulging in crisps, biscuits, or sweets.
Her relentless cravings, particularly for sugary treats, had spiraled into an overwhelming habit that she knew she needed to break. At her peak weight, she wore a UK size 28 dress and consumed as many as 5,000 calories daily.
Frustrated by her constant fixation on food, she made a bold choice to quit refined sugar cold turkey. Despite still enjoying sweets, she has managed to control her cravings.
“I was uncontrollably drawn to sugary treats,” Kristy recounted. “My love for sugar led me to consume it regularly. The cravings were overpowering, and I felt an urgent need to satisfy them for a quick fix. Food became my go-to comfort for all emotions; it was a constant presence regardless of my feelings.”
“But I refused to shorten my life by overeating and succumbing to an early demise.”
Kristy, aged 53, experimented with various diets and gym memberships in the past, but none yielded results. However, in October 2017, she made a decisive change. She abandoned sugar-laden products, fast food meals, and processed snacks in favor of homemade alternatives.
For breakfast, her choices now include peanut butter oatmeal cookies or eggs accompanied by an apple. Lunch consists of a substantial salad with chicken or steak, a piece of fruit, and raw veggies. Dinner typically features another protein source, such as chicken, steak, or fish, with roasted vegetables.
In moments of craving sweetness, she opts for fruits or nothing at all. She explained: “I have completely cut out sugar, sweeteners, and artificial additives. While I don’t use substitutes, I enhance the taste of dishes with bananas or sweet potatoes to satisfy my sweet tooth.
“I even prepare cottage cheese ice cream, and on my birthday, I indulge in a delightful fruit cake specially made for me. I would choose it any day over a traditional cake.”
Reflecting on her journey, Kristy stated: “I have been sugar-free for seven years, enjoying life and embracing the present moment.” Kristy used to spend a significant amount weekly to satisfy her cravings.
While her family members do not follow her strict dietary regimen, she advocates for reducing processed foods and opting for homemade items. Presently, she wears a UK size 16 and aims to maintain her healthy lifestyle naturally.
She added: “The cravings have vanished entirely. The taste of real food is now incredibly satisfying. I feel healthier in my fifties than at any other age.
