A woman who attributed night sweats, joint pain, and abnormal bleeding to menopause was surprised to learn she had cervical cancer despite a clear smear test result. Michelle Griggs, a 50-year-old social club manager, had been regularly attending smear tests that showed no issues.
However, as her symptoms worsened, Michelle consulted her GP and was diagnosed with cervical cancer. She expressed gratitude for catching it at stage one, emphasizing the importance of seeking medical advice despite assuming it was menopause-related due to matching symptoms found online.
Following her diagnosis, Michelle underwent an intensive treatment regimen including chemotherapy, radiotherapy, and brachytherapy. Despite not driving, she managed appointments with the help of friends and family. Working when possible, Michelle credited her colleagues and club members for providing support and distraction during treatment.
After completing treatment, Michelle received a clean bill of health in September and will undergo regular check-ups. She praised the hospital teams and Macmillan nurses for their exceptional care and support throughout her journey. Michelle now advocates for early detection and encourages others to seek medical attention promptly if they notice any unusual changes.
As she supports Cervical Cancer Awareness Month, Michelle urges everyone to prioritize their health, seek help when needed, and not hesitate to ask for assistance.
