“Man Sentenced to 16 Years for Coercing Woman into 1,000 Sexual Encounters”

A man has been sentenced to a minimum of 16 years in prison for manipulating a woman into engaging in sexual activities with potentially up to 1,000 men over a span of three decades. While the exact tally remains uncertain, the court was informed that the number could reach one thousand men within a 30-year timeframe.

Rodney Johnston, a 67-year-old resident of Starston in Norfolk, coerced the woman into participating in various sexual acts with men at remote rural locations, as well as in hotels and vehicles, the court revealed. These encounters often lasted for several hours and involved groups of up to 15 men, as stated by the jury.

During the trial in September where he was convicted, it was disclosed that Johnston documented the abuse by photographing and filming it. The victim’s impact statement was described as “harrowing” by Judge Alice Robinson, and the prosecution suggested that the woman may have been compelled to engage in sexual acts with as many as a thousand men, though the actual count might never be fully determined.

Following the trial at Norwich Crown Court, where he was handed a life sentence, the judge emphasized the profound and enduring impact of the abuse as articulated in the victim’s statement. Police uncovered a trove of over 30,000 images and videos chronicling the abuse, revealing that the woman was coerced into sexual encounters with men up to five nights a week.

The court found Johnston guilty of multiple offenses spanning from 1994 to 2024, including coercing a woman into sexual intercourse through threats or intimidation, causing sexual activity without consent, and intimidating a witness. Throughout the six-week trial, Johnston denied all allegations, claiming the acts were consensual. However, law enforcement presented evidence supporting the woman’s assertions of coercion and exploitation.

Johnston was reported to have sent mass text messages to men he had met on adult social platforms, advertising venues and times for sexual encounters with the woman. Norfolk Police noted that while Johnston dismissed many messages as “banter” and fulfilling a “fantasy,” numerous other messages corroborated the victim’s narrative, including communications she shared with a friend detailing the abuse.

In a post-sentencing statement released by the police, the victim expressed the unimaginable distress she endured, branding Johnston as a “monster” who treated her as an “object.” She conveyed feelings of filth, sickness, degradation, humiliation, and fear, highlighting the profound impact of the ordeal on her self-identity and the daunting task of rebuilding her life.

Family members of the woman expressed immense pride in her courage, while Senior Investigating Officer Duncan Woodhams commended her bravery and the extensive investigative efforts that culminated in Johnston’s sentencing. Woodhams conveyed gratitude for the victim’s trust in disclosing the prolonged and distressing abuse, urging other abuse survivors to come forward for support and justice.

Police announced an ongoing inquiry targeting other individuals involved in the abuse, hinting at potential prosecutions for additional offenders. They pledged a thorough investigation to identify and hold accountable all responsible parties, ensuring justice for the victim and any others impacted by the heinous acts.
