“Fans Gather for ‘Road to Avonlea’ Convention on P.E.I.”

In her youth in Detroit, Patty Czajka was captivated by a Canadian television series set on Prince Edward Island. Every Sunday, she would watch “Road to Avonlea” with her grandmother and was especially drawn to actress Mag Ruffman, who portrayed Aunt Olivia in the 1990s show.

Upon learning that Ruffman would be participating in a fan convention on P.E.I. dedicated to the series, Czajka eagerly purchased a ticket to attend. She expressed, “She was like my own Disney princess when I was growing up,” during the convention on Saturday.

Fans of “Road to Avonlea” gathered from various parts of the world for the fully booked event. The acclaimed Canadian series, broadcasted in over 100 countries, premiered in 1990 and concluded after seven seasons in 1996.

The convention, spanning three days, featured oyster and wine samplings, as well as panel discussions with the show’s cast and crew. Attendees also explored filming locations, Lucy Maud Montgomery’s birthplace, gravesite, and the Cavendish house that inspired her renowned work, “Anne of Green Gables.”

Edward Lemon, assistant director of Fine Book Fairs, shared his thoughts, stating that the show appeals to those seeking an escape and resonates with values like kindness and friendship. He expressed optimism for the show’s enduring popularity and the potential for future conventions.

Ruffman acknowledged the heartfelt connection with fans at the convention, emphasizing the lasting impact of the show on both viewers and cast members. Czajka mentioned revisiting the series with her children, finding joy in sharing a show that transcends generations.

“It’s a rare gem that is worth the time, and I’m delighted to pass it on to my kids,” Czajka remarked, reflecting on the enduring appeal of “Road to Avonlea.”
