“Dan Evans Contemplates Davis Cup Exit”

British tennis player Dan Evans caused a stir when he considered leaving the Great Britain team due to feeling slighted by a selection choice. Evans, a key member of the victorious 2015 Davis Cup team, expressed his disappointment at not being picked for the doubles event, hinting at potential non-participation in the prestigious tennis competition.

In an interview with the i, Evans stated, “It’s disappointing. To be frank, it’s a bit insulting also that I haven’t been picked ever to play the Davis Cup [in doubles].” He emphasized his belief that his doubles prowess should not be judged solely by his tour performances, highlighting his capability in the doubles format.

The situation escalated when Evans was left out of the doubles lineup at the 2021 Davis Cup Finals, leading him to express frustration at his repeated omission from such matches. Despite his concerns, Evans eventually partnered with Neal Skupski in a victorious doubles match against Colombia in the following year’s competition.

However, Evans’ participation in the 2023 Davis Cup Finals was cut short due to an injury. In the recent 2025 Davis Cup Finals, Britain faced a defeat to Japan in the opening qualifying round, eliminating them from the competition. Italy, led by Matteo Berrettini and Flavio Cobolli, advanced to the semi-finals, showcasing strong performances despite missing key players.

Berrettini’s victory against Jurij Rodionov and Cobolli’s win over Filip Misolic secured Italy’s spot in the last four, setting up a thrilling semi-final clash with Belgium. The defending champions displayed resilience and quality in their matches, proving their strength even without their top players.
