A mental health expert has clarified the concept of ‘mixed dementia,’ correcting a common misunderstanding. Dr. Kelynn Lee, CEO of the Dementia Care Hub and an expert in cognitive decline, recently addressed this topic on TikTok in response to a follower’s query.
The follower had assumed that a diagnosis of mixed dementia meant uncertainty among doctors regarding the specific type of dementia the person had. However, Dr. Lee explained that this was not the case.
Dr. Lee explained that mixed dementia occurs when an individual has more than one type of dementia, such as Alzheimer’s disease combined with vascular dementia. This form of dementia is common and involves the presence of two different types of dementia in one individual.
Dementia encompasses various conditions that lead to progressive brain function deterioration, including Alzheimer’s disease. The NHS estimates that over 944,000 individuals in the UK are living with dementia, with one in ten experiencing mixed dementia, as reported by the Alzheimer’s Society.
Mixed dementia does not have a distinct symptom profile as it combines different forms of the condition. Caregivers must familiarize themselves with the symptoms of each type, although one type may exhibit more prominent symptoms than others.
There is no known cure for mixed dementia, but treatments are available to manage its symptoms, which can include confusion, memory loss, and speech difficulties, among others. Individuals showing signs of dementia or concerned about a loved one should seek guidance from their GP.
Symptoms of dementia vary depending on the specific type, with mild cognitive impairment often preceding a dementia diagnosis. It is crucial to consult a GP if memory problems or other symptoms are causing concern, as dementia is not a natural part of aging.
