A major pharmacy chain on the high street has stepped in to rescue 60 branches of a competing firm facing financial collapse. Allied Pharmacies has assumed control of 60 Jhoots Pharmacies locations, most of which are currently shut. However, Allied has affirmed its commitment to restoring essential pharmacy services at these outlets.
This acquisition expands Allied’s presence to approximately 210 branches in England and Wales, as reported by C+D. In a statement, Allied emphasized the vital role community pharmacies play in promoting public health and well-being and acknowledged the impact of closures on vulnerable groups reliant on local healthcare services.
Members of Parliament were briefed recently on Jhoots’ pharmacy closures, raising concerns about communities losing access to healthcare services. Allegations of staff payment issues and overdue bills were also brought to light.
The ownership of the pharmacies is divided between brothers Manjit and Sarbjit Jhooty, who collectively operated around 150 Jhoots Pharmacies in the UK. Manjit Jhooty, through his companies Pasab and Jhoots Healthcare, owns more than 20 branches and refuted any operational problems. Sarbjit Jhooty, on the other hand, reportedly owns the remaining 129 outlets.
A spokesperson for Manjit Jhooty assured the BBC that his pharmacies are financially stable and continue to provide essential services to local communities. Sarbjit Jhooty conceded facing workforce and recruitment challenges but stated efforts were being made to address these issues. Jhoots has been approached by the Mirror for comment.
