A winter storm named Goretti has hit the United Kingdom today, covering the country in snow and ice warnings as blizzards sweep across extensive areas. The Met Office has issued yellow and amber alerts due to hazardous road conditions, predicting a mix of snow, ice, and rain with temperatures plummeting to as low as -12C. Goretti, named by Meteo France, is anticipated to worsen conditions in the southwest and rapidly intensify throughout Thursday and Friday.
Despite the disruptive weather, the storm has created picturesque wintry landscapes, with snowdrifts accumulating and locals enjoying the snowy scenery. The Met Office advises residents in affected regions to exercise caution, as Goretti is expected to bring very strong winds, particularly in southwest England, with gusts ranging from 70mph to 80mph, potentially peaking at 100mph. Areas severely impacted may face travel disruptions on roads and railways, along with the risk of isolation due to heavy snowfall.
The Met Office also warns of possible power outages affecting various services, including mobile networks, before the snow transitions to rain and sleet by the weekend. Some areas could see snow accumulation of up to 30cm, creating a festive atmosphere weeks after Christmas. Snowdrifts have caused significant disruptions in parts of the country, burying towns and vast stretches of countryside under layers of snow.
Authorities caution that travel may be affected by the snow, yet some individuals have been seen ice skating on frozen lakes despite safety advisories. The wintry conditions are expected to persist for the remainder of the week.
