Keir Starmer Slams Trump’s Greenland Tariffs

Keir Starmer criticized Donald Trump’s imposition of tariffs on countries opposing his attempt to acquire Greenland as “incorrect” during a series of conversations this afternoon, including one with the US President.

The Prime Minister engaged in an urgent discussion with the US President following accusations from NATO nations, including the UK, that Trump’s actions were jeopardizing diplomatic relations due to his threats of tariffs related to Greenland.

In a statement, Downing Street confirmed that the Prime Minister had spoken with various leaders before contacting President Trump. During these conversations, the Prime Minister emphasized the importance of security in the High North for all NATO allies and condemned the application of tariffs on allies striving for collective security within NATO.

President Trump recently announced plans to impose 10% tariffs on several countries, including the UK, if they oppose his bid for Greenland, with a threat to increase tariffs to 25% by June 1 if a deal is not reached.

Cabinet ministers, including Keir Starmer, lambasted the tariff threats as “completely inappropriate.” In a joint statement, several European countries, including the UK, expressed solidarity with Denmark and Greenland, emphasizing their commitment to Arctic security and sovereignty principles.

The UK’s Culture Secretary, Lisa Nandy, affirmed the UK’s unwavering stance on Greenland, rejecting Trump’s threats. Nandy emphasized the importance of the UK’s relationship with the US and insisted on respecting the wishes of Greenland’s people and Denmark’s sovereignty.

Notably, French President Emmanuel Macron and Sweden’s Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson also rejected Trump’s tactics, with the EU convening emergency talks in response to the escalating situation.

The situation remains tense as global leaders navigate the fallout from Trump’s tariff threats, with a strong stance on sovereignty and unity against divisive actions.
