A leading supermarket chain has introduced a new ‘small steak’ option designed for individuals undergoing weight loss injections who need smaller portion sizes while maintaining a nutritionally balanced diet.
Ocado’s latest ‘weight management’ category showcases products from Marks & Spencer’s nutrient-rich range tailored for those on GLP-1 weight loss therapies. The selection includes dishes with fewer than 600 calories but high in protein content.
Among the offerings is the Turf and Clover small extra lean steak (100g), M&S high protein cottage cheese, beef burgers, and nutrient-dense Romesco chicken. Additionally, items like Huel ready-to-drink black edition chocolate 500ml, chicken teriyaki, and turkey lentil bolognese meals are available.
Ocado now joins Marks & Spencer, Waitrose, and Greggs in launching fresh product lines aimed at individuals using GLP-1 medications.
According to recent statistics, around 2.5 million adults in the UK were using weight loss injections by July last year. However, Ocado’s survey indicated that only 40% of consumers fully understood how GLP-1 drugs, known by brand names like Mounjaro or Wegovy, aid in weight loss.
Moreover, 73% of respondents expressed interest in knowing which foods could help them maintain lean muscle mass during their weight loss journey.
Charlie Parker, senior nutritionist at Ocado Retail, emphasized the importance of incorporating diet and nutrition into weight loss discussions, particularly with the increasing use of weight loss medications. Customers are actively seeking high-protein, high-fiber foods and balanced meal options to support their weight loss efforts.
Recent data from Ocado showed a significant increase in the demand for protein-rich essentials, with sales of steaks rising by 63%, chicken by 88%, cottage cheese by 138%, and liquid egg whites by 82% from late December to early January.
The research, conducted by Savanta, surveyed 2,134 adults across the UK in December.
