Erin Doherty has shared a surprising connection to a well-known comedian, expressing her interest in meeting him now that they have both achieved fame. The 33-year-old actress, recognized for her portrayal of Princess Anne in the third and fourth seasons of the Netflix series The Crown and as child psychologist Briony Ariston in Adolescence, disclosed that Romesh Ranganathan, aged 47, used to be a mathematics teacher and served as her Head of Sixth Form at Hazelwick School in Three Bridges.
During an interview with her co-star Malachi Kirby on Sky News while promoting season two of the Disney+ show A Thousand Blows, Erin recounted an incident where she was reprimanded by “Mr. Ranganathan” for failing to read the required material, resulting in her removal from an English Literature class. She mentioned that despite not having Mr. Ranganathan as her math teacher, her sister did have him. Erin revealed that she had a conversation with Mr. Ranganathan, as he was then known, regarding her dismissal from the English literature class.
When asked if she had crossed paths with Romesh since gaining fame, Erin expressed her desire to meet him. Notably, Hazelwick School has also seen other notable figures such as Gareth Southgate, Dan Walker, and Chico as former students.
A Thousand Blows, set in late 19th-century London, tells the story of Jamaican immigrant Hezekiah Moscow (portrayed by Malachi Kirby), who becomes embroiled in the ruthless world of bare-knuckle boxing. The series explores his rivalry with boxer Henry ‘Sugar’ Goodson (played by Stephen Graham) and the complex relationship with Forty Elephants gang leader Mary Carr (played by Erin).
The drama, which premiered last year, made a comeback with its second season on Disney+. Viewers have praised the show as “absolutely epic,” describing it as a character-driven masterpiece that vividly portrays the gritty world of bare-knuckle boxing in 19th-century East London.
